Zuma highlights TB and oceans to depleted Parliament

South Africa will launch a “massive programme” this year to battle tuberculosis in prisons and mining communities, president Jacob Zuma said in his state of the nation speech on 12 February.

Zuma also mentioned the creation of three universities and an initiative to benefit from the ‘blue economy’ of the oceans.

About a quarter of the seats were empty when Zuma spoke, as earlier the Speaker of the house had instructed security staff to escort red-clad members of the Economic Freedom Fighters party out of the chamber for disrupting proceedings.
