First Malawi woman wins Rhodes scholarship

Mary Jiyani, a law student in South Africa, has become the first female from Malawi to win a prestigious Rhodes scholarship to study at the University of Oxford in the UK.

The University of Cape Town student has also won a Mandela Rhodes Scholarship, which she will use to study for a masters degree in private law and human rights at UCT in 2016.

Jiyani says her interest in law sprung from a fascination with the relationship between law and justice. She volunteered at the Malawian justice ministry’s legal aid division during summer holidays.
