Jonathan Jansen, the outspoken former vice-chancellor of the University of the Free State, has been appointed president of the Academy of Science of South Africa.
Jansen takes over from Daya Reddy in the wake of ASSAf’s council elections on 25 October. The council is comprised of 12 elected members and one appointed by the science minister.
Jansen rose to fame as the first black vice-chancellor at UFS, taking over after widely publicised racial incidents on the campus.
