Southern Africa bloc launches pharmaceutical cooperation plan

Southern African states are deepening their cooperation in pharmaceutical matters, with a focus on indigenous knowledge.

The Southern African Development Community launched its Pharmaceutical Business Plan on 2 August during the 15-member bloc’s Industrialisation Week in South Africa.

"Through the Business Plan we want to establish a regional databank of African traditional medicines and medical plants [and] develop and retain competent human resources for pharmaceutical programme," said Joseph Mthetwa from SADC’s health and pharmaceuticals programme.
