Gift targets needy scholars whose family earnings exceed state support threshold
The University of the Witwatersrand has secured a R150 million (US$9m) private donation to support needy students who don’t qualify for government aid or other bursaries.
The donation by billionaire Natie Kirsch’s charitable foundation will set up an endowment fund open exclusively to “missing middle” students whose family income exceeds the threshold for free studies, but who can’t afford to finance their studies on their own.
