South African journal to publish special issue on Nattrass paper

Editor welcomes ‘heated’ debate over article on race and subject preference

The South African Journal of Science will publish a special edition to address the furore caused by a recent article on race and subject preference, Jane Carruthers, SAJS editor-in-chief, announced on 11 June.

Carruthers said that the “special compilation issue” will be published in July and include rebuttals of the now infamous paper by University of Cape Town economist Nicoli Nattrass, which examined reasons why black students are under-represented in biological sciences. The compilation will contain the original article and a response by Natrass.
