South African opposition says government plans to forgive student debt

But higher education minister dismisses the claim as false rumour

South Africa’s largest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, has alleged that the government plans to forgive R2 billion (US$120 million) worth of historical student debt. 

However, Blade Nzimande, the minister of higher education, science and technology, this week denounced the rumour, saying the opposition has it wrong.
