UCT warns of funding squeeze in research report

Centres of excellence and chairs at the university face ‘uncertain’ future

Funding shortages caused by the global pandemic and challenges in accessing national funding pose risks to research at the University of Cape Town, according to the institution’s 2019 research report, published on 10 July. 

“Income from national funding, particularly the National Research Foundation, continues to be a challenge,” the report says. There’s a lack of “soft funding” to service research staff who rely on competitive external grants and contacts, it says.
