South Africa greenlights ‘dark energy’ telescope

R35 million instrument brings together partners from Botswana, Canada, France and elsewhere

South Africa has earmarked R35 million (US$2.3m) for the construction of another cutting-edge radio telescope to be located in the country’s arid central Karoo region.

The National Research Foundation announced on 24 March that funding for the Hydrogen Intensity and Real-time Analysis eXperiment (HIRAX) had been approved.
