Push for sustainable fishing practices behind innovation push

South Africa’s commercial fishing sector is more innovative than both the agricultural sector and the forestry sector according to a review of innovation performance from 2016 to 2018 published on 4 May.

Eighty-five per cent of the fisheries that responded to the survey—”a very high proportion” the review report notes—reported that they were innovation-active. The report says most of the innovation in the sector related to improving the sustainability of fish stocks.
