The South African Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the South African Rooibos Council (SARC) are giving almost R10 million (US$581,000) between them to research the health benefits of rooibos.
Sunita Kalan, director of sector and local innovation at the DSI, said her department had pledged R4.8m, which was matched by SARC. She explained that the funds were channelled through the Sector Innovation Fund, a programme launched by the DSI to encourage research, development and innovation (RDI) in various fields.
