R500m upgrade to veterinary vaccine manufacturing facility suspended since 2021 over “ongoing legal matters”
Cracks emerged in South Africa’s new coalition government this week after the country’s agriculture minister and former opposition leader vowed to investigate the fate of “missing” R500 million ($28m) meant for veterinary vaccine development.
The agriculture department made the grant in 2013 to upgrade the vaccine manufacturing facility of the country’s Pretoria-based Onderstepoort Biological Products, a state-owned pharmaceutical company. The project has yet to be completed.
