Discussions on philanthropy at the African Grantmakers Network assembly in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 30 October to 2 November presented a picture both troubling and promising.
Troubling because support for the next generation of Africa’s researchers was strikingly absent from the meeting’s agenda. A catchphrase for the event, ‘Africa, the new terrain of thought leadership’, offered more smoke and mirrors than hard facts.
