University commission frets over Nigeria’s shoddy laboratories

The head of Nigeria's National Universities Commission has voiced concern about the poor state of research equipment in Nigerian universities and the underutilisation of funds meant to remedy the situation.

Julius Okojie cited a study conducted by the NUC and the World Bank that paints a distressing picture of the country’s research infrastructure. The report found that less than half of laboratory equipment surveyed was functional: 28 per cent was not in working order and 24 per cent was completely outdated.

His remarks were made on 4 December at a seminar on universities’ research equipment.
