The Indonesia-based Center for International Forestry Research and Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have set up a lab for greenhouse gas research in the Congo basin.
The lab cost up to US$500,000 and is based in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé. It will evaluate how deforestation is affecting greenhouse gas levels, analyse soil samples and gauge the environmental impact of different land uses.
The lab will also add to understanding of how climate change concerns can be combined with pressures to strengthen agriculture and increase food production in Africa.
