MRC Gambia gets extension for pneumococcal research

The UK Medical Research Council unit in The Gambia has received £1 million (US$1.46m) from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to extend for 18 months its research on pneumococcal infections.

The pneumococcal surveillance project started in the MRC field station in Basse in 2011. It was meant to end in December 2014, but will now run until mid-2016.

The project extension will fund the development of pneumococcal vaccines. Such knowledge could help other African countries sustain their immunisation programmes against pneumonia, meningitis and septicaemia, the MRC unit said in a statement.
