New Zealand universities spend NZ$250,000 on ‘celebrity honours’

Universities in New Zealand have spent NZ$250,000 on awarding honorary degrees to celebrities and dignitaries over the past decade, The New Zealand Herald reports.

According to the newspaper, the University of Auckland was the biggest spender of the eight institutions, awarding 27 such degrees at a cost of NZ$94,500. Victoria University gave the most honorary degrees—63, at a cost of NZ$56,834.
