In depth: Victoria is “the education state”, according to its vehicle registration plates since 2016. But an older slogan, in place from 2000-13, which called Victoria “the place to be”, would be a more apt description for the state’s position in the driving seat of Australian medical research. In December last year, a group of state and federal politicians posed, spades in hand, at a “ground-breaking” ceremony for Australia’s new messenger RNA vaccine manufacturing facility at Monash University in outer Melbourne.
