Fiji hosts research centre for green ocean transport

A renewable energy research centre in Fiji will look at ways to reduce the dependence of Pacific Island nations on imported fossil fuels for ocean transport.

The Oceania Centre for Sustainable Transport has been set up by the University of the South Pacific in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature at the USP’s Laucala campus in Suva.

At the launch of the centre on 13 December, the university’s pro vice-chancellor John Bythell said it would be a “one-stop shop” for sustainable sea transport research and also provide support for regional policy development.
