Award will further research on ancestral ‘Hobbit’

An Indonesian archaeologist who co-discovered fossil remains of a one-metre-tall ancient hominid dubbed “the Hobbit” has become the first recipient of a University of Wollongong scholarship commemorating the find.

Thomas Sutikna has been awarded UOW’s inaugural Michael Morwood Fellowship to continue excavations at the Liang Bua limestone cave on the island of Flores in Indonesia.

The postdoctoral research award commemorates the UOW archaeologist who co-led the Flores project team until his death in July 2013.
