Australia ‘out of step’ with Asian university policy

Australian universities risk losing ground to Asian competitors by “blurring the line” between research and vocational education, a leading political science academic has warned.

Peking University professor of Australian studies, Greg McCarthy says there is a growing disparity between Australian and Asia universities because of the federal government’s push for greater research engagement with industry.

In a paper published by the Asia and the Pacific policy forum at the Australian National University in Canberra, the former president of the National Tertiary Education Union is highly critical of what he calls “the commercialisation of academic institutions”.
