Plastics ‘kill huge numbers of hermit crabs’ on island beaches

Comparable losses worldwide could affect marine ecosystems and the economy, says Tasmania researcher

More than half a million hermit crabs have been killed by plastic debris on remote islands in the Indian and Pacific oceans, a study led by the University of Tasmania has found.

The study found that plastic pollution littering the beaches of the Cocos (Keeling) and Henderson islands created barriers and potentially fatal traps for the crabs.
