Bob Carr, a foreign policy academic and former state premier and federal foreign affairs minister, has accused Australia’s conservative media outlets of running a “smear campaign” to denigrate Australians of Chinese heritage.
In an editorial for China Daily, an English language newspaper and website funded by the Chinese government, he says Chinese-Australians should create an organisation similar to the Jewish Anti-Defamation League in the United States.
“It should be an organisation without any links to Beijing or any obligation to defend China’s system of government; an organization that will assert that migrants from China who do the right thing should not be subject to taunts and stereotypes and vilification,” he writes.
