Hockey sets tough deadline on budget bids

The federal government is inviting submissions from individuals, businesses and community groups on funding priorities for the 2014-15 budget.

But, it’s a tight deadline. Treasurer Joe Hockey wants submissions to be lodged “as soon as possible, and no later than Friday 31 January 2014”. That’s just a little over five weeks to pull together all the relevant statistics and references.

Hockey also wants longer submissions to include an executive summary of no more than two pages. He says the government “places considerable importance on receiving community views” to inform the budget process. But surely he also knows that January means school holidays and summer downtime for government agencies and non-government organisations. It will be hard to find both the staff and the time, to put a submission together.
