Xenophon challenges Treasury on energy policy

Independent federal senator, Nick Xenophon says he is “shocked” that the Treasury hasn’t created models to compare the cost benefits of emissions reduction and clean energy technologies.

The South Australian representative has provided additional comments to a Senate environment committee report that endorses the Abbott government’s plans to repeal the previous government’s carbon pricing laws. The report was tabled in the Senate on 2 November.

He raised questions about Treasury modelling in a Senate estimates hearing in November. In response to those questions, Treasury officials confirmed they had not “undertaken an analysis of the effectiveness of different programmes” in cutting greenhouse emissions.
