Increasing the number of people over 65 years in the workforce is critical to Australia’s economy, federal assistant employment minister Luke Hartsuyker has told a conference in Melbourne.
Speaking at the Committee for Economic Development Forum on 12 March, Hartsuyker said the government’s recent intergenerational report revealed that the number of Australians aged 65 or older is predicted to more than double by 2055. Over the same period, the number of people aged between 15 and 65 will halve as proportion of the population, he said.
Hartsuyker said many employers needed to “improve their attitude towards employing mature age workers”.
