Queensland senator and former criminology lecturer Brett Mason has resigned from federal politics.
Mason announced his resignation to a coalition party room meeting in Canberra on 24 March. He later issued a brief statement saying he would “continue to represent the interests of the people of Queensland”, fuelling speculation that he might be considering a switch to state politics.
The Liberal National Party senator was parliamentary secretary for foreign affairs and was largely responsible for overseeing the government’s New Colombo Plan to encourage Australian students to study in Asia. He lost the role in a cabinet reshuffle in December, and was demoted to the back bench by Tony Abbott.
