Policy expert warns against fee deregulation

Deregulation of university fees will leave future federal governments with little power to influence higher education policy issues such as skills shortages, a leading education academic has told a Senate inquiry.

The director of the University of Canberra’s education institute, Louise Watson said universities needed a funding system that was predictable, affordable and defensible.

In her evidence to a Senate education committee hearing on 6 March, Watson said there “should be constraints” on university fees.
