Partisan policy changes ‘bad for shipbuilding industry’

The future of Australian maritime engineering is being undermined by political instability and partisan policy changes, a leading shipbuilding engineer has told a Senate inquiry.

Shadbolt Engineering senior business manager John Wardell said uncertainties created by the four-year federal election cycle were costing the shipbuilding industry “hundreds of millions” in lost skills, training opportunities and jobs.

“The Australian shipbuilding industry is finally getting the talent and the capacity to do world-class ships, and I am seeing it very quickly decaying and falling away,” he told a Senate economics committee inquiry.
