A cross-disciplinary research group at the University of Newcastle in New South Wales has received a $77,000 federal grant to help fund education programmes on disaster management in south-east Asia.
The team is led by engineer and UON head of construction management Jason von Meding, who has published widely on post-disaster management research and disaster response training.
The group has received an inaugural Australia-ASEAN Council grant to work with universities in Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand to strengthen regional capacity to respond to natural disasters such as floods and cyclones, as well as regional threats caused by social, political and economic pressures.
