Kaplan wins science prize for bird brain book

One of Australia’s leading natural history writers, Gisela Kaplan, has won a major science award for her book on the cognitive behaviour of native birds such as magpies and galahs.

Kaplan’s most recent book, Bird Minds, is the winner of the 2016 Whitley Award for the best scientific publication on Australian wildlife. The annual award is chosen by the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales and honours Gilbert Whitley, an eminent Australian ichthyologist.

Kaplan is professor of animal behaviour at the University of New England at Armidale in the NSW northern tablelands.
