Sudanese refugee in line for national honour

University of Wollongong law graduate Deng Thiak Adut has been named New South Wales Australian of the Year for his work with the state’s Sudanese refugee community.

The award means that he is now a finalist for Australian of the Year, which will be announced in January.

Adut, a former child soldier in South Sudan, graduated from UOW with a Master of Laws in criminal prosecution in 2014. He came to Australia in 1998 as a teenager, unable to read and traumatised by his experiences in Sudan’s civil war.
