Gibson named head of UN data science group

One of Australia’s leading digital education researchers, David Gibson, has been appointed inaugural chairman for data science in higher education by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

Gibson is the director of learning futures at Curtin University in Perth, and has led development of digital learning and teaching technologies. He has also been a regular speaker at UNESCO educational forums on the global challenges and benefits of using data science to improve education systems.

Announcing the appointment, Curtin vice-chancellor Deborah Terry said it reflected the university’s commitment to the use of data science “to solve real world problems in education to benefit future students”.
