Review to look at pollution from fire control foams

One of Australia’s top consultant toxicologists, Andrew Bartholomaeus, will head a federal investigation into the long-term health impacts of chemical foams used by firefighters.

Announcing the appointment on 4 August, federal health minister Sussan Ley said the investigation will include an assessment of polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAs) in drinking water.

Bartholomaeus is an adjunct professor with the University of Canberra’s pharmacy school and the University of Queensland medical school.
