Citizenship chaos inspires ‘word of the year’

The Australian National Dictionary centre in Canberra has named “Kwaussie” as its 2017 word of the year.

The word refers to a person who is a dual citizen of Australia and New Zealand, or more colloquially, someone who can claim to be both a Kiwi and an Aussie.

Other words on the annual short-list included: “jumper punch” – an Australian Rules Football term for a punch disguised as grabbing hold of an opponent’s jumper; “robodebt” – a debt incurred as a result of a federal data matching and debt recovery programme; and “WAxit” –  the hypothetical departure of Western Australia from state government organisations that support federal policies.
