Smart cities could reduce climate risks, says CRC chief

Australian water utilities are “ill-prepared” to meet the challenges of climate change and extreme weather, says a leading design engineer

Tony Wong, chief executive of the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities, has warned that urban water management must move beyond a “taps and toilets” approach to more complex and flexible systems.

In a guest editorial for the Australian Water Management Review, Wong says a new approach is needed that sees cities as water catchments and “blue-green” ecosystems.
