Research for public good lost from CRC agenda

Australia’s industry minister Ian Macfarlane appears to have ruled out research for the public good in the latest round of federal funding for Cooperative Research Centres, with the emphasis on market needs and export potential.

Macfarlane (above) has called for CRC proposals to “address market needs and focus on solutions that diversify the Australian economy and improve the competitiveness, productivity, sustainability and export potential of Australian industries.”

This means CRC proposals for research in areas such as environmental science, community health and the arts would be unlikely to meet specifications for the seventeenth round of funding.
