Martin Barlass, chairman of the Plant Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre in Canberra, suggests that Australia’s low global ranking for research collaboration with industry could be linked to the number of scientists who choose to remain at universities.

In an editorial posted on the CRC’s website, he says that around 70 per cent of scientists in the United States work in private industry.
