Election clash over new CRC bid timing

Labor’s science spokesman, senator Kim Carr, has accused the federal government of breaching election caretaker conventions by announcing the 2019 funding round for Cooperative Research Centre bids.

Federal industry, science and technology minister Karen Andrews launched the opening of the 21st round on 30 April, along with revised bid guidelines and a 1 July deadline for stage one submissions.

But Carr hit back, telling journalists the announcement was “flaunting the caretaker conventions and subverting Labor’ policy position on the CRC programme.” Andrews replied on social media that the announcement was “routine” and within caretaker guidelines.
