Regional universities network established

A network to advocate on behalf of universities based in regional areas was established on 14 October.

The Regional Universities Network comprises Central Queensland University, Southern Cross University, Ballarat, the University of New England, the University of Southern Queensland, and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The network will be chaired by David Battersby, University of Ballarat vice-chancellor.

“The Regional Universities Network has been established to provide policy advice to government, to strengthen and promote the contributions of regional universities to regional and national development, and to build the institutional capacity and sustainability of its members by sharing best practice,” said Battersby.

“By leveraging our collective resources and capabilities, the member universities can achieve even more for their regional communities with flow-on benefits to national prosperity and development,” he added.

Charles Sturt University is not involved in the network, despite participating with its six members in a joint submission to the base funding review submitted under the banner of “the Consortium of Regional Universities”.

But Sunshine Coast has been accepted into the network although the government has designated it part of a major city, stripping it of any regional standing.
