Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation has partnered with Chile to tackle major challenges faced by the mining industry.
The CSIRO Chile International Centre of Excellence in Mining and Mineral Processing, launched on 15 December, aims to develop technologies that reduce the environmental impact of mining and increase its productivity.
The centre will act as an international education and training facility that will build the services and manufacturing industries in both countries through partnership with industry. It will also aim to tackle the mining sector’s global skills shortage.
The centre is co-funded by the Corporación de Fomento de la Producción de Chile (CORFO) and supported by the University of Antofagasta, Cicitem and industry partners Anglo American North SA and South SA, Antofagasta Minerals SA, BHP Chile Inc, Codelco, and Xstrata Copper Chile.
