ANSTO confirms Synchrotron rescue

The Australian Synchrotron will come under federal control from 1 January. the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation said on 28 October.

The Synchrotron has struggled for funding this year. A four-year, AU$100 million federal-state rescue package was announced in March, and over the summer Australian universities raised an additional AU$25m to help keep the facility open.

Keith Nugent, director of the Synchrotron, said the agreement to let ANSTO take the helm secures the future of the facility until the end of June 2016.
