Research initiative aims to halve cost of solar power

CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, will lead an AU$87 million research initiative that aims to cut the cost of solar thermal power by more than half.

The initiative, announced on 13 December, includes US and Australian universities and agencies.

Australian participating institutions include the Australian National University, the University of Queensland, the University of Adelaide Flinders University, and the University of South Australia. From the US, the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories and Arizona State University are involved.

CSIRO has also announced its lead role in the US‐Australia Institute for Advanced Photovoltaics, launched last week at the University of New South Wales.
