AU$4m super computer launch at UWA

The Australian federal government will fund a AU$4 million terascale research supercomputer under its Super Science Initiative, research minister Chris Evans announced on 3 August.

Based at the University of Western Australia (UWA), the Fornax is the second of three supercomputers commissioned as part of the government’s AU$80m Pawsey Centre project.

The even more powerful petascale Pawsey Centre supercomputer system will be installed in 2013, Evans said.

“With these systems, we’re building world-class supercomputing facilities, and expertise to match, that will put Australia at the forefront of research in radioastronomy, the geosciences and other high-end computational research,”, he added.

Fornax is operated collaboratively between CSIRO and UWA, Murdoch University, Curtin University and Edith Cowan University.
