Defence white paper launches submarine R&D programme

The Australian federal government has announced a science and technology programme for research into submarine warfare as part of its 2013 defence white paper.

The document, published on 3 May, reveals that a new science and technology programme will support national and international research collaborations to address security problems and that this will initially focus on technology for the country’s submarine programme and increasing knowledge about undersea warfare. The focus will be on high-risk, high-pay off technologies.

The white paper also commits the Defence Science and Technology Organisation to carrying out research to identify future opportunities in undersea warfare, over-the-horizon radar, integrated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, future electronic warfare, cyber systems, bio-preparedness, trusted autonomy, and the viability of space technologies.
