Antarctic researchers face uncertain future

The Australian Antarctic Division has been told it will lose research and technical support jobs as a result of a $100-million budget cut to the federal Department of the Environment.

The department’s secretary, Gordon de Brouwer, and senior officials flew to Tasmania on 8 April to brief a meeting of around 300 AAD staff on voluntary redundancies.

Prime minister Tony Abbott has pledged to cut more than 12,000 federal public service jobs to achieve budget savings of around $5 billion.
