Barley researcher takes top communication award

One of Australia’s leading barley scientists has won a national award for his work in helping Western Australia’s farmers meet the challenges of the world’s changing malt markets.

Blakely Paynter, a senior research officer with the WA Department of Agriculture and Food, has written an updated guide to barley varieties for the state’s $800 million a year barley industry.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation announced Paynter as the 2015 western region winner of its annual Seed of Light award for his work in communicating barley research results to WA growers.
