Australia ‘must invest more in waste reduction research’

Smarter strategy and design needed to meet national waste reduction goals, report says

Australia needs to invest in research to meet its national goals for waste reduction and recovery, according to a report from the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering.

The academy has called for the creation of a Cooperative Research Centre for advanced materials development to help the country reach its 2030 targets. The National Waste Policy Action Plan sets a target of an 80 per cent average recovery rate from all waste streams by 2030, a total reduction of waste by 10 per cent per person and an end to exports of many forms of waste.
