‘More rigorous’ approach to public research funding needed

Good public spending needs to go beyond priority areas, top state scientist says

The return on investment of publicly funded research needs to be considered when deciding how to spend funding, the chief scientist of Queensland has said.

In a paper published by the government on 17 May, Hugh Possingham (pictured) outlined a decision-making method for public research spending that would provide “a more rigorous return-on-investment approach”.
