Head of Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Larry Marshall, bows out

When Larry Marshall, chief executive of Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, closes his office door today for the last time, he’ll be leaving behind a very different CSIRO to the one he joined in 2015.

Over his long leadership, Marshall has at times been a polarising figure, with his enthusiasm for research translation and private sector collaboration perceived by some to be at the cost of basic research.
